Scientists are noticing that there is a smaller amount of births on Halloween and more births on Valentines Day. They think that mothers would prefer to not have their child on Halloween because of connotations that people hold with the holiday. Researchers think that the fears that the mother has may affect their hormones that control their labor and put off the birth. The opposite is thought for births on Valentines Day with the possibility that the mothers’ excitement for having the child on that day may cause the child to come early. Scientists are still researching whether the emotional state of the mother during the two holidays really affects when they have the child or if it is just a coincidence.
I found this thought really interesting. There are many hormones involved during a woman’s pregnancy such as FSH and hCG, I think that this curiousity of the scientists could possibly lead to interesting findings. Some mothers try to have their child on specific days for different reasons. With research, maybe there could be a way for doctors to help women who really want a specific date make that happen. The researchers think that the woman does a large part of this subconsciously, but again, I would be interested to find out if that is true. Natural births, c-sections, and induced births are all seen to rise or drop on the certain holidays, so I would think that would be a large coincidence to just occur.
